Port Heiden’s farm proudly welcomed two new members to its ranks recently. Freed from their protective carapaces, these tiny beak-demons emerged ravenous and emitting peeps of rage.
Earlier in the summer, another round of hatching yielded three chicks. But only two of the three made it. One tries to administer food, water, and love in optimal doses, though sometimes it’s not enough. Which is sad, but that’s life. Death is tough, on the farm and in general.
However, this seems to be a time of new beginnings on the farm – six new piglets were born this very afternoon. More on them tomorrow.
Stay warm.
