Bacon in Port Heiden

Do you like bacon? I sure do.

Yet, for one who enjoys such succulently savory meat, I’ve never actually spent any time around the creatures from which bacon comes.

Life in the Alaskan village of Port Heiden has been a crash course in pig posterity. There’s startling complexity in the mad world of these four-legged bacon-providing beasts. Surprisingly, this has just made bacon that much tastier.

Also, the stories are true: they oink a lot, smell real bad, and will eat practically anything (even humans!).

This next little string of posts will discuss pork production in Port Heiden. Hold steady, this is going to be wild.
